Platform: Brightspace
This guide is meant to help you understand how the grade return process works with this Brightspace integration.
Steps
-
When an assignment link is created using the Plugin, a Brightspace grade book column is also created.
-
When a student clicks on a link and completes a LabSim resource, that score will be transferred to Brightspace within 1-2 minutes.
-
The highest earned score will be passed to Brightspace. If your schools wants to receive the most recent score in your Brightspace gradebook, please contact your TestOut representative.
Note: There is a one-to-one relationship between the assignment link and the gradebook column. A student must click on each link for LabSim to know where the score should be placed in the Brightspace grade book (even if the learning resource has been previously completed inside of LabSim).
For example, on the screen below, if a student clicks on and completes the lab 2.2.4 and within LabSim navigates to and completes 2.2.5 without returning to Brightspace and clicking on the 2.2.5 link, only the score for 2.2.4 will come back to the Brightspace grade book (if the instructor doesn’t use the Sync Score feature.
-
If an instructor of a course would like to ensure that their gradebook is up to date, instructors can access the Plugin through Course Builder and press the Sync Grades link. This feature will go grab all scores for all students enrolled in the Brightspace course (and enrolled in the instructors’ LabSim classes), regardless of whether students clicked every link.
Note: Only grades achieved in LabSim Between the LabSim Class Start date and End date will be sent to Brightspace. The LabSim Class Start date is the day the an instructor or student clicks the first link from the Brightspace course. The LabSim Class End date is seven (7) months from the Start Date.
Note: An instructor must click at least one assignment from Brightspace to LabSim before scores begin to return. . -
Once in the LabSim Grade Sync Center, you can Synchronize Student Grades by pressing the Sync Grades button. Note: TestOut sends a raw percentage score to the LMS.
-
After you press the button, you will see the request as Submitted. You will also see a history of previous updates.
Note: If you have set due dates on any of your created Brightspace assignments, the sync score will not sync grades obtained in LabSim outside of those due dates (regardless of LabSim Class Start/End dates).
-
-
Once the sync request starts to process, you will see the current class that is being processed in the Status column. You will see this check all classes in which you are assigned as the instructor (including those within which you do not use TestOut).
-
The Updates column tells you how many grades have been updated. The Log column will convey sync progress (Top bar=overall progress, bottom bar=progress within the current course).
Note: The sync process only updates scores that have been obtained Between the LabSim Class Start date and End date (see above). The process also respects any assignment due dates. If an assignment was completed after the due date, its score will not be updated in the Brightspace gradebook.
Also, if a student has created a TestOut account through testout.com work completed in this account may not be synchronized to Brightspace. In this situation, it is quite likely that the student has two TestOut accounts - one created by the Brightspace integration (when the student clicked their first assignment link), and the other through testout.com. If you determine that a student has two accounts please contact TestOut Technical support to have these accounts merged together so all work completed will sync to Brightspace.
