Using LMS Integration to place CertMaster Practice content into Canvas (LTI 1.1)

Placing links to the Learner Dashboard and Instructor Dashboard into a Canvas Module

1. In your Canvas course, click Modules in the course navigation bar on the left.

2. Find (or create) the module you want to place CertMaster Practice content in.

3. Click the '+' icon at the right of the module title bar.

4. Select External Tool from the dropdown at the top of the dialogue that appears.

5. Select the desired CertMaster Practice tool from the list that appears.

   • The tool name can be altered in the LMS tool configuration, but if you followed our configuration documentation, it will begin with ‘CertMaster Practice for <Certification Name>…'

6. Select the item you wish to place in the Module.

7. Repeat steps 3-6 for both the Learner Dashboard and Instructor Dashboard.

8. Publish the ‘Learner Dashboard’ item by clicking the green checkmark to the right of the item in Canvas. Leave the 'Instructor Dashboard unpublished, so that only Canvas Instructors can view it.

Adding the Practice Test as a graded Canvas Assignment

1. In your Canvas course, click Assignments in the course navigation bar on the left.

2. Click the blue +Assignment button in the upper right.

3. Scroll to the Submission Type section, select External Tool from the dropdown, and click the Find button that appears.

4. Select the Practice Test tool from the list that appears

   • The tool name can be altered in the LMS tool configuration, but if you followed our configuration documentation, it will be called ‘CertMaster Practice for <Certification Name> Practice Test’

5. Finally, fill out the rest of the Assignment configuration as desired. Learner scores will returned as a percentage that is then applied to the Points value you assign in the Canvas settings.

Functionality and Tips

LTI 1.1 Basic Outcomes Functionality

• Our LTI 1.1 tools utilize 1EdTech’s Basic Outcomes functionality to pass grades back from our platform to the Canvas gradebook.

• There are a couple of requirements for this process to happen properly in CertMaster Practice:

  1. Only items set up as direct module links or Practice Test links will pass back grades. Grades for activities completed through a Learner Dashboard will not pass back.

  2. Only items set up through the Assignments settings ‘Submission Type’ dialogue in Canvas (see ‘Adding the Practice test as a graded Canvas Assignment' above).

  3. Learners must enter through the link in question in order for the grade to be sent back to the gradebook.

• Provided these requirements are met, grades will return to the LMS within seconds of student completion.

• If you wish to use the smaller, individual modules from CertMaster Practice, they can also be directly linked, but note two things:

  • Due to the nature of the smaller CertMaster Practice modules – taking the user through each question multiple times until they ‘master’ them – full completion of a module implies a grade of 100%.

  • If you understand this, and still want grades to pass back for them, we recommend utilizing an LTI 1.3 configuration for that (rather than LTI 1.1, discussed in this article), as it greatly simplifies the process. See our accompanying article.

1.4 Select ‘External Tool’ at the top, and then click the desired CertMaster Practice tool.
