CompTIA is transitioning Learning Management System (LMS) integrations with CertMaster (formerly TestOut/LabSim) away from the now-deprecated LTI 1.1 standard to LTI 1.3 Advantage, which provides much greater security, as well as other quality of life improvements.
Starting July 1, 2024, CompTIA will no longer support LTI 1.1 integrations for the following LMSes:
Canvas
Blackboard (Learn or Ultra)
Moodle
D2L Brightspace
Starting July 1, 2025, CompTIA will no longer support the LTI 1.1-based integrations:
- Canvas "TestOut EduApp"
- D2L Brightspace Plugin
Existing courses will be allowed to finish out their time, but new CertMaster courses will no longer be allowed to be created after those dates. Instead, you will need to integrate via LTI 1.3, the newer and more secure protocol. For more info on why the transition is happening, see this article, but please return here and review the following instructions on how to transition.
Setting up the 1.3 tool and rebuilding your LMS courses
- Request - Fill out our brief Integration Request Form -- under 'LMS Request Type', select 'LTI 1.1 to 1.3 transition'. Please read the rest of this doc so you have an idea of what's to come!
- Configuration - Our team will work with you and your LMS administrator to configure the new LTI 1.3 tool according to the following documentation. If you need additional assistance, we're happy to set up a screen share and walk you through the process.
- Build - After configuration, any courses using the older integration method will need to be rebuilt to use links created by the new tool. We strongly recommend using fresh course shells, rather than deleting and replacing the old links in your existing course. Numerous technical issues can arise from trying to rebuild an existing course or even a copy of one.
- Cleanup - Once your new course is in place, please follow the steps in the next section for your LMS to remove the old 1.1 tools from your system. Leaving them in can cause confusion among instructors or other staff who are unaware of the deprecation.
- Communicate -- Relatedly, please tell all instructors and instructional designers who work with integrated courses about the change. If nothing is communicated, they will expect to continue to interact with our system the same way they did with the 1.1 tools, leading to confusion and technical issues.
Removing LTI 1.1 Tools and Links
Note: If you have live courses that use LTI 1.1 links, please save this step for once those courses have finished, but we do recommend setting a reminder in your calendar to come back to this, as leaving old tools in can often be a source of confusion for instructors who aren't aware of the transition, and after July 1 2024, the tool will lose functionality.
Canvas
LTI tools can be configured at the account, sub-account, or course level. Exactly what needs to be done may differ based on where your organization originally configured the tool.
- Confirm no live courses are using links created by the TestOut EduApp.
- Navigate to Admin -> root account -> Developer Keys in the left nav bar, and find the TestOut EduApp key. Note, you may need to select "See More Keys" at the bottom, as Canvas' search function only searches the keys that are currently showing. Disable or delete this key.
- If you have the TestOut EduApp tool configured at the account, sub-account, or course level, click the Admin tab on the left, select the account where the tool is configured.
- Navigate to Settings on the left nav bar, then the Apps tab.
- Click the View App Configurations button in the top right.
- Find TestOut Eduapp in the list (make sure not to delete the new 1.3 one!), click the gear on the right, and select Delete.
- Note: If you see a padlock icon to the left of the tool and an 'i' icon instead of a gear, that means the tool is configured at an account/sub-account higher in the Canvas sub-account hierarchy than where you are. Navigate to the parent account and try again.
- Delete any defunct course shells or old masters that contain LabSim LTI 1.1 links.
Blackboard (Learn or Ultra)
- Confirm no live courses are using the old tools.
- Navigate to System Admin, and select LTI Tool Providers in the Integrations section.
- Find the LabSim LTI 1.1 tool (note the 'Tool Type' column -- make sure not to delete the new 1.3 one!).
- Check the box next to it, click the Delete button at the top, and confirm.
- Delete any defunct course shells or old masters that contain LabSim LTI 1.1 links.
D2L Brightspace
- Confirm no live courses are using the old tools.
- Logged in as an Admin, click the Gear icon in the upper right and select External Learning Tools in the Organization Related section.
- Click the Manage Tool Providers (Legacy) tab at the top.
- Find each instance of labsimapi.testout.com in the list, click the dropdown arrow next to it, and select Delete.
- Click the Manage Tool Links (Legacy) tab at the top.
- Find each item with a URL that begins with https://labsimapi.testout.com/..., click the dropdown next to it, and select Delete.
- Delete any defunct course shells or old masters that contain LabSim LTI 1.1 links.
Moodle
- Confirm no live courses are using the old tools.
- Logged as an admin, navigate to Site Administration --> Plugins tab --> Manage tools (in the Activity modules section)
- Find the LabSim 1.1 tool among the cards at the bottom (don't accidentally delete the new 1.3 one!), and click the trash can.
- Delete any defunct course shells or old masters that contain LabSim LTI 1.1 links.
